Fire extinguishers are designed to be used on specific classes of fires, and are colour-coded accordingly. The classes of fires are as follows:

Fire Extinguishers for Class A fires

Class A fires involve wood, paper materials, clothes, furniture, etc. A variety of fire extinguishers can be used on Class A fires including water and hydrospray extinguishers, plus water with additive, AFFF foam spray, and ABC powder extinguishers.

Fire Extinguishers for Class B fires

Class B fires involve flammable liquids such as diesel, petrol and spirits. Class B fires should be tackled with caution, and using AFFF foam, ABC powder, CO2 or Monnex powder fire extinguishers only.

Fire Extinguishers for Class C fires

Class C fires involve flammable gas, and should only be tackled with a powder extinguisher IF and WHEN the gas has been turned off.

Fire Extinguishers for Class D fires

Class D fires involve flammable metals, often found in laboratories and manufacturing. Class D fires must only be extinguished using a specialist fire extinguisher, such as an M28 or L2 powder extinguisher.

Fires involving electrical equipment

Fires in, on, or around electrical equipment must be tackled with a 'dry' extinguisher such as a CO2 or powder extinguisher, or an FE36 gas automatic fire extinguisher.

Fire Extinguishers for Class F Fires

Class F fires involve fats or oils, and should only be extinguished using a wet chemical extinguisher.
