CO2 Fire Extinguishers
Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are ideal for fire involving electrical equipment, as the gas extinguishes the flames without leaving any residue.
CO2 fire extinguishers work by excluding oxygen from the flames and, in effect, smothering them. CO2 gas is held in the fire extinguisher under high pressure, and is released through a special horn on the extinguisher. The rapidly expanding gas is also very cold, further helping to extinguish the flames, so you should keep your hands away from the horn when using, to avoid frostbite!
How To Identify CO2 Fire Extinguishers
CO2 fire extinguishers are usually painted red, with a black label at the top, and a distinctive swivel horn near its valve. Essential Fire Safety also sell chrome carbon dioxide fire extinguishers for the design-conscious environment. We also offer a special non-magnetic CO2 fire extinguisher for MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanner rooms and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers (NMR's). Our non-magnetic CO2 extinguishers have distinctive blue squeeze handles.
For large-scale sites with big machinery, computer rooms or switch rooms, Essential Fire Safety stock larger sizes of extinguishers mounted on special wheeled trolleys, in 10kg, 20kg and 45kg sizes.
Due to the cost of collection, maintenance and repairs, it may prove cheaper to replace your old CO2 extinguishers with new ones rather than refill them. Old CO2 fire extinguishers are extremely useful for hands-on fire training before being collected for recycling.
