Intumescent fire stopping products work by creating a fire-proof seal or barrier, that prevents flames travelling through small gaps for up to an hour. There are two types of intumescent materials:
Hard Expanding Intumescents
Hard expanding intumescents expand when heated to rapidly fill small gaps, such as the space between a fire door and the door frame. Fire cannot travel through the now-closed gap, so the fire can be contained for longer.
Soft Char Intumescents
When soft char intumescents are exposed to heat, they form a light ash, which is a poor conductor of heat. Soft char products often also contain a hydrate, which releases water to keep the product cool.
Fire Pillows
Fire pillows laid in cable runs will react to heat and expand to block the space, preventing fire from spreading through a conduit or ducting. Smaller gaps in brickwork, etc, can be filled with a squirt of fire-rated foam.
Intumescent Door Seals
Intumescent door seals can be fitted into a channel on a fire door, or even attached to the top. When exposed to heat, an intumescent door seal can seal the door for up to sixty minutes. Our combined fire, smoke and draft seals feature a nylon pile plus one or two rubber blades (depending on models) to provide an airtight seal, and also prevent dust travelling from fire escapes into rooms.
