Foam Fire Extinguishers
Foam fire extinguishers are easily recognised either by the cream band on their red body, or the top black panel on a chrome foam fire extinguisher.
Foam fire extinguishers have developed away from their smelly and sticky origins to become efficient and effective fire-fighting equipment for Class A and B fires. (The awful smell came from the use of animal proteins in the old-fashioned foam extinguishers...) Modern foam fire extinguishers contain Aqueous Film Forming Foam, also known as AFFF (pronounced A-triple-F). This foam is sprayed out via a special nozzle, which will not conduct electricity if the foam accidentally splashes on electrical equipment. When used on fuel fires (Class B), the foam forms a film on the surface of the liquid, preventing reignition.
Foam fire extinguishers also weigh less than traditional water filled extinguishers. For example, a 6 litre foam extinguisher has the same fire fighting rating as a 9 litre water extinguisher, but luckily for the user, weighs 30% less.
Chrome Foam Fire Extinguishers
Chrome foam fire extinguishers are made from highly polished stainless steel, so they are highly resistant to corrosion. They also look good! In all other respects, they are identical to the standard red foam fire extinguishers, but due to their mirror finish, they cannot carry a BS EN3 Kitemark.
Foam fire extinguisher accessories include wall hanging brackets and floor stands for red-bodied extinguishers, and curvaceous chrome finish stands for chrome foam fire extinguishers.
